about

NN2023: [dbo/REDVX] is a retrospective archival release. A lost record if you will. Most of these tracks were made around late 2014 to early 2015 while I was still living in Leeds. Inspired by the grating sounds of city centre development and an extremely loud kettle that would hiss over the radio in my kitchen. It was a time where I felt very free to experiment with sound due to the fact I didn’t know the full capabilities of the tools I was using (and I still don’t to be fair). The mixes are very raw, most of these were effectively played and tracked live through Ableton, however, it's tedious to make excuses for your early work so I shall just let it breathe.

The loose concept of NN2023 was built around the idea of a possible future (I would like to avoid the word “dystopian” as it suggests a binary state of being), where sound is architecture and, at times; incredibly brutal, exhilarating, nihilistic, numbing, murderous, disquieting. I had already conceptualised the trilogy of records that resulted in; Sarni Deli, Botanical and Love Relic, the first being based around an architect that created cities from sound, so really this was an extension of that idea with a different colour palette and a more tenacious approach to production. It was also around this time that I started to think more about Hip-Hop and its relationship to noise, which ultimately resulted in me penning an article for Noisey on the phenomenon. I was no doubt listening to a lot of Dalek, Tri Angle Records, B L A C K I E, Five Star Hotel, Public Enemy, DJ Rashad, Oneohtrix Point Never, Ratking and Death Grips.

For some reason or another the project was left by the wayside until 2018, when I decided to incorporate a lot of these tracks in a live set at CHUNK (RIP) in Leeds under the title of ‘dARK bEATS oNLY’. The performance was recorded and released as a split cassette with my former band with Alessandro Salzano (RIP) - Quit Yer Sen/Calm Yer Sen Down Pet. I had always intended to eventually release the “studio” version of this record in some form, but it was only the other week when I started looking at it again, that I realised this was in fact 2023 (as I had tagged them all with that year), it indeed was their time. Back when I was working on this music that year seemed so far in the future to me.

The tracklist of NN2023 varies slightly to the live version of dbo. For the live version ‘shank’ and ‘Shoes’ were blended together and there were additional tracks from Botanical played. Additionally NN2023 contains 4 previously unheard tracks.
