The first side of this tape is a live recording of a performance I did at Chunk called dARK bEATS oNLY. The set was mostly made up of tracks that i've never played anyone before, from the dark age between the 'Sarni Deli' and 'Botanical' albums. Consider these the d-sides. The gig was put on by Theo Gowns (who also designed the sleeve). Opening the affair were Dwindling, headlined by Penance Stare. Rob Molloy kindly lent me his portable recording device.

The second side of this tape is a recording I cherish very dearly, it’s one of the few recordings of the band Quit Yer Sen/Calm Yer Sen Down Pet - a collaboration between myself and my recently departed friend and musical brother Alessandro Marcello Pio Antonio Salzano (although you can just call him Al). We both met at Leeds College of Music in 2007 and had played in various musical projects together and wanted to tap into our love of experimental and improvisational music, as well as our cheeky tendencies to piss people off and weird people out. The name Quit Yer Sen is our Yorkshire way of saying “Kill Yourself”, in part tribute to the Bradford noise-rock band Kill Yourself (a precursor to the much loved That Fucking Tank), while also acknowledging that one must relinquish one’s ego/self before surrendering to the process of musical collaboration. So what about the “Calm Yer Sen Down” part of the name? Well, Al wanted to call it that, so with us both being quite stubborn we decided to have both names.

The first gig we played together was at Oporto on Call Lane supporting Louisa Osbourne and Chris Mulligan’s band Witch Hunt (Al was playing drums in Chris’s other band Buffalo Bones at the time). I remember being so enthralled in our set that it actually gave me an outer body experience, I think this is something that comes with playing with someone you know so well and having developed an intimate musical language over the years. Despite our mutual enjoyment we got an absolute stinker of a review from Steve Walsh in Vibrations magazine:

“Drums and bass/electronics improv duo Quit Ye[r] Sen’ not only have a daft name but have committed the cardinal sin of thinking improvisation involves just making some uncoordinated noise for a while. They are clueless, devoid of any worthwhile ideas and the sort of outfit who give improvisation a bad name. Miss”.

But Al loved it, because it was proof that we actually "shat on someone's concepts" as he would probably put it. He never needed validation, he was always ready to push as much as he was ready to give. Exceptionally gifted as a musician and beyond generous as a friend.

By 2013 Al had moved back to London to look after his Dad before he passed away, but would make occasional trips up to Leeds to visit friends, teach a drum lesson or two and attend to his allotment. I was living in the infamous Harolds when he came up to visit me for a couple of days in February 2014, we took a taxi down to Chunk (which at the time was in the basement of the Sandway business centre on Shannon Street) and set a few things up to play and record with Jonathan Duffin’s Zoom recorder. As always, we had little idea of what was going to happen, we just had fun. He took this photo before we hit record. We had one more performance after later that same year (which I believe Hattie Ball still might have video footage of), but sadly we never played together as a band after that. The last time we were together was in Manchester during the AlgernonCornelius x Tony協Yap tour in November 2017. Al passed away on July 12th 2018 after a short battle with cancer. I can’t describe all the things I felt about him and what he meant to me, all I can do is give you the pieces we put together, the things he left behind.
